5 Thought Friday
Here are 5 Thoughts for the week as I reminisce about a friend’s passing:
1. What I am currently reading, viewing, or listening to:
“103 Bits of Advice I Wish I Had Known”; Kevin Kelly
Ponder, laugh, and even shed a tear. This list of unsolicited advice is quite amusing and useful. Here are just a few:
No one is as impressed with your possessions as you are.
Cultivate 12 people who love you, because they are worth more than 12 million people who like you.
Don’t keep making the same mistakes; try to make new mistakes.
To keep young kids behaving on a car road trip, have a bag of their favorite candy and throw a piece out the window each time they misbehave
When you forgive others, they may not notice, but you will heal. Forgiveness is not something we do for others; it is a gift to ourselves.
Life lessons will be presented to you in the order they are needed. Everything you need to master the lesson is within you. Once you have truly learned a lesson, you will be presented with the next one. If you are alive, that means you still have lessons to learn.
It is the duty of a student to get everything out of a teacher, and the duty of a teacher to get everything out of a student.
2. Gratitude Practice (for improved happiness):
Grateful for all of the time my friend and mentor was able to spend coaching me over the years.
His passing earlier this month was a profound reminder of the impermanence of life, so use your time seeking greater joy and sense of purpose. You will be missed dearly, Mr. O’brien!
3. Wellness ideas to consider:
Dr. Peter Attia Podcast on Exercising for Longevity: Takeaways
Strength and stability are required to live longer
How to live to join the Centagenarian Olympics (those over 100 years old)
Deadlifting, when done correctly, is critical to quad strength
Training and activities in Zone 1, 2, and 5 heart rate are the main targets of training. Zone 3 and 4 are simply too strenuous on the body
4. What I’m eating, drinking, buying, or whatever else is on my mind:
C&C for Mother’s Day: Champagne and Coconuts. Not sure this is the healthiest combination, but it was sure a beautiful day with Irene and friends on Mother’s Day.
5. Quote(s) I am Pondering:
“Son, if you keep up this lifestyle, you are going to die!” Michael D. O’Brien
This was the opening wake-up call for me that led to a 25+ year mentorship that completely changed my life for the better. Rest in Peace, Mr. O’Brien.
Happy Friday!
Mike
