5 Thought Friday
Here are 5 Thoughts for the week!
1. What I am currently reading, viewing, or listening to:
Flow; Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi
This book summarizes decades of research on the positive aspects of human experience—joy, creativity, and the process of total involvement with life, which the author calls FLOW.
For the record, I have made zero attempts at pronouncing Mihaly’s last name
2. Gratitude Practice (for improved happiness):
Grateful for completing the Galaxy half marathon (21.1 km run) this past weekend at 2:13:27. While it wasn’t my personal best, I was so joyous that I had the presence of mind to stop running and walk when a small muscle injury came up at km 16.
I attest this ability to stop to my advanced “kill criteria” planning that I developed after reading Annie Duke’s book “Quit”, which I recommended two weeks ago.
3. Wellness ideas to consider:
RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) for minor injuries - because we are all going to have these at some point
Here is a great summary from WebMD for future reference
4. What I’m eating, drinking, buying, or whatever else is on my mind:
Italian Radicchio; It is classified as chicory and the taste is a mix between onion and scallion. First time trying it, so I ate it raw and also sauteed (prepared by an Italian chef) and I would definitely try it again!
Check out the photo HERE. It is quite an unusual-looking specimen.
5. Quote(s) I am Pondering:
“Advance planning and precommitment contracts increase the chances you will quit sooner. When you enter into a course of action, create a set of kill criteria. This is a list of signals you might see in the future that would tell you it’s time to quit. Kill criteria will help inoculate you against bad decision-making when you’re “in it” by limiting the number of decisions you’ll have to make once you’re already in the gains or in the losses.” Annie Duke, Quit
If I had not followed this philosophy during the half marathon, I surely would have further compounded a minor muscle tear.
Happy Friday!
